Green Building and Remodeling : 30 years and
still on the path of living lightly on the earth.
The main goal of EcoArtisan Builders, located in San Diego, California, is to create exciting projects that suit the clients’ needs and, by using green building techniques, have a lower impact on the environment and the earth’s finite resources. There are many building and remodeling companies jumping on the green bandwagon. Some are qualified and others are not. Many are just using it as a marketing approach, a “fad”. For me and my company, it is a lifestyle that I have lived since 1979.
A successful green project is far more often the result of a very creative design and construction process, using space and materials wisely, than it is the result of a huge budget. An extremely large home full of “stuff” is not commensurate with living lightly. Architect Sarah Susanka’s “not so big house” concept is very much in line with my philosophy. I also agree with her that it needs to be beautiful to be green.
The world has changed radically since I finished college in the late 1970’s, yet by and large, we still build houses much the way we did in the 50’s. While part of the reason for this is that it is based on materials and methods that have worked well for centuries, innovation is slow to be embraced by the construction industry and many homeowners. There are a great number of new, innovative and sustainable green building products and methodologies around that deserve consideration.
Since the end of World War II we have been, both individually and collectively, living way beyond our means. The recent economic calamity and other factors should give us pause to reevaluate our lifestyles and priorities and pursue a new sustainable and eco-friendly direction. Every dollar we spend on green and energy conserving products is an investment toward a planet that will nurture future generations and not just our own.
If we are truly serious about cleaning up the messes we have made, we need to be willing to think outside the box alot more than we have in the past. At EcoArtisan Builders, we have 30 years in the industry and have been building ‘green’ projects long before the term “green building” came into the lexicon. We have working relationships with others in the remodeling, construction and design fields who share the same goals. Many of these people are members of the U.S. Green Building Council and/or Build it Green, as are we.
